Forest Friends Feast

The winter fun layout was found in the February 2015 edition of Family Fun magazine. It shares information on making fun creations, especially with children, to make the winter season more enjoyable. The two typefaces used in the layout are sans serif and a decorative font. Sans serif is always easiest to identify since it doesn’t have any serifs and it’s pretty simple. The decorative font does have a slight serif; at first glance, I thought it might be a slab serif typeface. However, the font is so chunky that the serifs seem to get lost making it more decorative.

Color and weight are both used as contrast to differentiate the highlights in the article. The use of the bold heading with the bold and light weight sans serif all create a contrast of color even within the black text. The pink is a nice contrast to the light blue background to highlight the lists, tips, and picks. They even changed it up by using the decorative font in white on the pink bubble. Less important information is in blue (very little contrast) or italics text.

The photographer used a shallow depth of field for the snow cake. This puts a strong focus on the cake leaving the background blurred and irrelevant. The photo with the ice blocks uses the rule of thirds to put focus on the children as well as the colorful blocks. The horizon line is also roughly one-third of the photo.

My snow cakes, feasts for forest friends, are pretty similar to the original photo using fruits, vegetables, and seeds. I prefer odd numbers, so I went with three layers for my cakes. The natural light of the sun on an overcast day was good for a clear photo, but the lighting is different on my photos from the original. I was planning to take more photos closer to the end of the day, but my cakes started to melt and were no longer photo worthy.
